WORLD QUILTING DAY CELEBRATED IN IRENE VILLAGE

There are very few things more comforting than snuggling up under a beautiful home-made quilt. This age-old craft was celebrated at Irene Village Mall on Saturday 20 March 2010, with an exhibition and demonstration by our own local masters, the Jacaranda Quilters Guild.

This non-profit organization is aimed at keeping the tradition of quilting alive and well. The Jacaranda Quilters Guild was established 10 years ago and they currently boast 250 active members. The entire group meets three times a year, but smaller home-based groups meet bi-weekly all over the Jacaranda city, and even in more remote areas like Warmbad and Witbank.

Every year they also make a quilt for a chosen charity organization, which is then gifted or raffled out. Surprisingly, the guild also has several male members, including the world-famous Roy Starke, whose quilts are sold as far afield as the USA. They also participate in the World Travelling Expo, whereby their quilts “tour” museums in various countries, representing the rainbow nation.

Their devotion to this magnificent craft is contagious, and they’ve certainly recruited a few new enthusiasts with their lively presence at Irene Village Mall this past weekend!
